Balmenach was one of the first distilleries to be granted a licence after the 1823 excise act, this means it was probably producing whisky at this site well before that date. The Distillery was founded by the McGregor family and was owned by them until around 1920 when they were forced to sell it due to financial circumstances. As a point of interest, one of the members of the McGregor family was Sir Compton MacKenzie, author of the famous "Whisky Galore". In 1962 the number of stills was increased from 4 to 6 and around 1968 the mash house was rebuilt. The Balmenach Distillery was mothballed in 1993 but reopened in 1998 when it was purchased by Inver House Ltd. Balmenach produces some great single malts and whisky for blends such as Hankey Bannister.
