The Cairn O'Mohr winery started by Ron and Judith Gillies in 1987. Based around an 18th century farm steading, it's a beautiful place in the country producing award winning fruit wines from berries, leaves and flowers. All the ingredients are gathered fresh from around and about the rolling hills of perthshire. All the Cairn O' Mohr wines have distinctive rolling flavours, juicy and aromatic. There is a lot to do and see there, it is well worth a visit.

Here are a selection of wines produced at the Cairn O' Mohr winery:

AUTUMN OAK 13.5%

Twist my arm and I’ll say it tastes like slightly musty Granny Smiths and some other things; it tastes beautiful and for a while after it is gone. You can serve this one round the table especially good with lamb and other lighter meats and fish probably.

Serve chilled.

BRAMBLE 13.5%

The brambles we gather in from various different locations as good as I can get them, and it always works out fine by the end of the season. I have to be a nuisance in the pursuit of the best though. The finished wine is a little excitable on its own so we blend it with some sensible Oak Leaf wine to bring it down to earth and give it a drier finish.

Good with food or to finish off the day.

ELDERBERRY 13.5%

Full bodied Elderberries hanging black in the hedges. Destalked and crushed, blended up with sugar syrup and fermented on the pulp. Serve it on its own at room temperature in company like you would a Port. Some people like it with Oatcakes and Cheese I believe. Looks like Black Pudding, has a curious nose and a smooth body.

ELDERFLOWER 11.5%

This is a classic country wine, fermented from fresh wild elderflowers to produce a beautifully light summery, medium sweet and tangy white wine.

Serve chilled.

GOOSEBERRY 13.5%

Here’s a ripe gooseberry wine, fruity and tangy, not too sweet not too dry. A bit like a kind of juicy, lemony, spicy, thing with gooseberries flying in at the end in a light furry way. Sweet-ish with some bite.

Serve cool.

RASPBERRY 13.5%

Our Raspberry wine is made from a mix of three locally bred varieties of fruit. Some of the berries come in well ripe for fullness of flavour but, I also like to get in some earlier fruit for a bit of bite in the glass. The berries are infused in hot water to draw out the flavour then hand strained, fermented with French grape yeast till done, allowed to clear, bottled, laid on its side in the dark. It just tastes of raspberries.

Serve chilled.

SPRING OAK LEAF 13.5%

Our Spring Oak leaf is made from a sweet green tea of fresh picked, young leaves and some fruits. Grape yeast is blended in and the mixture is stirred for three days then strained off the must and left to ferment out. After it has cleared it’s bottled and kept on its side in the dark until ready. The flavour is of lemons, yellow apples, bananas, melons, green grapes, rhubarb (the yellow bit).

Serve cold, a couple of bottles with some friends but be sure to get your share.

STRAWBERRY 13.5%

Our strawberries come into the winery fully ripe when they are at their most flavoursome. They are then chopped up with cold water to be strained after two days. This Strawberry juice is blended with sugar syrup. The yeast is added and the fermentation begins.

When the wine is ready it clears, is bottled up and lain down on its side in the dark. The taste is rich and full, sort of like a strawberry tart or something with apricot, gingery, slightly musty, there that’s the best I can do for you.

Serve cold, on its own with people. I always recommend that you get at least two bottles, because if there’s just one and you want more - then there isn’t any.

STRAWBERRY 11% (SPARKLING)

When you are driving round the back roads of lowland Perthshire at the beginning of July on a beautiful hot sunny day with the window down, you may be lucky enough to catch a waft of the most fantastic scents in the world – fresh Strawberries and Elderflowers.

We have tried to capture this in our luxurious Sparkling Strawberry Wine, fermented from the finest fresh Strawberries and Elderflowers of Perthshire.

Serve very cold in a tall wine glass.

OAK AND ELDER 13%

This high quality Scottish sparkling wine is the result of the happy marriage between wonderfully full-flavoured oak leaves and fragrant elderflowers picked wild from the beautiful Braes O’ Gowrie in Tayside.

We call it the wedding blend, as we created it for our own wedding. Now you can enjoy it for your own celebration party or have it with your tea.

Serve chilled.

Bramble & Oak leaf

An annual ritual, every year at our Burns supper, is sampling the range of regular Cairn O Mohr wines to try and work out which is the best one to go with haggis, neeps and tatties. After much experimentation and the recurring mild disappointment we had to conclude that none of them quite did. The bramble seemed to have the closest affinity yet was a little too volatile, too cluster bomb in combination, too holding your own in the ring with Batman and Robin. So we designed this wine specifically to match the peppery feast by folding some of the calming oak leaf in with the bramble.

It works for us. Try it.
