The Dalwhinnie distillery is the highest in altitude of the Scottish distilleries at, 1057 feet above sea-level. It was founded in 1898 by John Grant, (solicitor), Alex Mackenzie, who designed the distillery and George Sellar, (Grocer), they named it The Strathspey Distillery.
Unfortunately it closed soon afterward, due to a recession in the whisky industry, and was bought by A P Blyth who changed the name to The Dalwhinnie Distillery and called in the renowned distillery architect, Charles Doig of Elgin, to improve the building and equipment. The distillery changed hands a few more times over the years and is now owned by United Distillers & Vintners. In 1992 the distillery closed for a £3.2 million refurbishment, re-opening in March 1995, and now employs 6 people in the production of the "gentle Spirit".
Only about 10% of the whisky produced at the Dalwhinnie Distillery is sold as single malt, 90% of it is used in blended whisky, including the famous Black & White blended whisky label.

Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky Dalwhinnie 15yo is a good introduction to the delights of single malt whisky - elegant, smooth and medium-bodied with a light, fruity palate and a whiff of heather on the finish. Part of Diageo's Classic Malt range.

Nose: a beautiful marriage of mainly two aromas. First, all sorts of beehive aromas (wax, honey, pollen) and then a soft marmalade side (yellow plums, some apple). All this coated with a layer of peat smoke that’s just great. Hints of turpentine. Some oak and grassy notes.
Mouth: starts powerful and peppery. Less fruity than expected, although there is some pear. A bit of caramel. Then shows grassy notes and big hints of herbal tea, liquorice and mint. A bit heavy on the oak.
Finish: fairly herbal and slightly bitter. Hints of peat again. Medium length.
