The Isle of Skye Brewery was established in April 1995, the first commercial brewery in Skye and the Western Isles. December 1995 saw their beers start rolling out the doors of their purpose built premises at Uig, Isle of Skye.

Initially a part-time operation, production moved to full-time in October 1998 when Angus MacRuary, one of the original founders, gave up his job as head of business education at Portree High School to concentrate on running the business. Brewing duties are undertaken by Angus`s wife Pam (at the time Scotland`s only female brewer) and Norrie MacLeod.

Here is a selection of the excellent beers produced at the Isle Of Skye Brewing Company :

Regular Cask Ales

Picture
Red Cuillin 4.2% ABV

The Skye Brewery`s much-prasied flagship ale. Reddish-hued, slightly malty and nutty in character, smooth to the taste. A multi-award-winning ale, named after the well-known hills of the Isle of Skye.

Picture
Black Cuillin 4.5% ABV

A distinctive dark ale brewed with roast barley and rolled roast Scottish oatmeal, giving an almost stout-like bitterness, smoothed through the addition of pure Scottish heather honey. It is believed that this is the only ale, as distinct from stout, which uses rolled roast oatmeal.

Picture
Young Pretender 4% ABV

Produced to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the ending of the Jacobite Rising, Young Pretender is the driest and hoppiest Skye ale. Golden-coloured, with a refreshing full flavour, it has received many Beer of the Festival awards.

Picture
Blaven 5% ABV

The strongest of the regular Skye ales, Bla Bheinn, the blue mountain, is a deep golden ale, malty and full-bodied, with a fruity, hoppy character and a delightful Fuggles hop aroma. Originally a winter ale, now available all year round due to demand.

Picture
Hebridean Gold 4.3% ABV

A unique ale, brewed with porridge oats to produce a beer of exceptional smoothness with a deep and creamy head. It has both a light hop aroma and a good "bite" of bitterness.

Picture

Tarasgeir 4% ABV

Another unique ale produced with the help of the Ardmore Distillery in Aberdeenshire, who supply us with some of their peat-smoked malt. This imparts a superb smokiness to a dry and refreshing beer. We describe it as our "marmite" ale - you will either love it or hate it! ("Tarasgeir" - a peat-iron, used for cutting peats.)

Seasonal Cask ales

Picture
Cuillin Beast 7% ABV

Skye`s strongest ale, originally only brewed for the bottle but now available in cask. Its fruitiness, sweetness and dry caramel belie its strength. It was won many awards in competitions and at festivals throughout the UK. In the USA is is known as "Wee Beast" in its bottled form.

Cuillin Beast won Champion Beer of Scotland 2011 - Well done to all the team at Isle of Skye Brewing Company !

Picture
Lord of the Ales 4.5% ABV

Originally produced as a one-off brew called "Two Rings" to celebrate the wedding of Angus and Pam MacRuary, this light-golden ale proved so popular that it now appears often. It has a fruity, full-bodied character with a very light bitter aftertaste.

Picture
Skye`s Grand 5.5% ABV

This is another celebratory ale - to commemorate the 1,000th Skye brew in 2005 - that is now availabel in the seasonal range. It is a well-balanced refreshing ale, full-bodied at 5.5%, with a distinctive fruity aftertaste.

Picture
Oyster Stout 4.5% ABV                   Please Note:  Oyster Stout Is No Longer Being Brewed

Named, not because it contains oysters, but because oyster stouts were historically brewed to accompany them at the start of the oyster season in September. Skye Oyster Stout is smooth and creamy with a delicate hint of chocolate and has a soft and satisfying bittersweet aftertaste.

Picture
Skyelight  3.8% ABV

This light and refreshing ale, available throughout the summer months, is a real thirst-quencher. Plenty of fruit and hops lead to a lingering light hoppy aftertaste.

Witchwand  4.0% ABV

Uniquely brewed with Skye rowanberries, is a lightly hopped, amber ale. It has a hint of spice and pepper and a lingering fruity aftertaste.
