The Lochnagar Distillery that you see today dates from 1845 and was built by a Mr John Begg. There were two previous distilleries on this site, which were completely legal, both burned to the ground probably at the hands of the illicit distillers in the area. In 1963 the distillery was greatly enhanced and upgraded and in 1990 a visitors centre was added. It gained it's "royal" status from it's nearby neighbour in Balmoral who granted a Royal Warrant in 1848. The Royal Lochnagar Distillery produces some excellent single malts and is also produces whisky for  Johnnie Walker blue label, it was also a key ingredient in VAT69.
