Located on the eastern edge of the Monadhliath Mountains, Tomatin has a feeling of remoteness about it.

As a distilling site Tomatin reaches back to the 15th Century when drovers, bringing their cattle over high mountain passes to the market at Tomatin, filled their flasks from a still at the Old Laird’s House, beside the current distillery buildings. A formal distillery was commissioned on the site in 1897, and at 315 metres above sea level it is one of the highest in the country.

In 1985 the Distillery was acquired by Japanese shareholders, who established The Tomatin Distillery Co Ltd and secured the future of whisky distilling in the Monadhliath hills. Tomatin now operates 12 stills, and in 2007 produced 2.5 million litres.

Below is a selection of the whisky produced at Tomatin:

25 year old Tomatin

A rich, full whisky with a predominantly malty fragrance. On the palate, the spirit is quite dry, with an aromatic aftertaste - which leads one to naturally address it again.

Aroma – The nose has a wondrous combination of ripe pears and orange zest over the resins of pine of cedar.

Palate – The taste is honey sweet for an instant; thereafter, dry, nutty and savoury, though the sweetness hovers on the edge of your consciousness well into the long dry aftertaste.

Finish – There is that oily richness again, and the memory of the dram is chewy and very long lasting.

Casks – Matured in refill American Oak casks

‘A perfectly superb whisky, which I would rate as one of the finest distilled spirits I have ever encountered’ Phillip Hills, Author, The Scotch Whisky Directory.
