The Tomintoul Distillery Ltd was established in 1964 by two companies, Hay & Macleod & Co and W. S. Strong - both whisky brokers located in Glasgow. The distillery was founded due to the fact that at that time there was a shortage of malt whisky for blending.

The Distillery is located five miles north of Tomintoul, (2nd highest village in Scotland), close to the famous whisky producing Glenlivit area with a plentiful supply of water from the Ballantruan Spring. The founding companies merged with Whyte & Mackay in 1973, they then increased the number of stills from 2 to 4. The distillery was purchased by Angus Dundee plc in 2000

The malt whisky produced has been a long time contributor to Whyte & Mackay blends.

Here are a selection of whiskies produced at the Tomintoul Distillery:

Tomintoul 12 Year Old / Sherry Cask 70 cl 40%

A new variant from the under-appreciated Tomintoul, this has been finished in an Oloroso sherry cask and is soft, sweet and creamy. Great value, as always with this distillery.

Tasting Notes by Martine Nouet

Nose:  Malty.  Cheery cereal notes alongside with freshly squeezed orange juice.  Distant aroma of dried fruit.
Palate:  Smooth.  Sweet and tender.  Praline, nougat.  Bowl of cereals with honey.  Milky chocolate.
Finish:  Nutty and creamy.  Spicy comeback.
Comment:  On the sweet side.  An invitation to enter the candyshop.  A morning dram?

Tomintoul 16 Year Old 70cl 40%

Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Long known as 'the gentle dram' Tomintoul 16yo is soft and nutty, with a pleasant richness. A Gold Medal winner at the International Wine & Spirits Competition, (IWSC).

Tomintoul Peaty Tang 70cl 40%

Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky

This new no-age-statement peated Tomintoul may be similar to the Old Ballantruan but at a reduced strength. Either way, it must be worth a punt for peatheads.

Tomintoul 27 Year Old 70cl 40%

Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky

A key element in Whyte & Mackay, who owned the distillery for a number of years, Tomintoul is a much overlooked malt.

Tomintoul 33 Year Old / Special Reserve 70cl 43%

Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky

A long-aged expression of Tomintoul, this 33yo replaces the old 27 yo bottling. Another winner for Angus Dundee, who have done great things with this distillery since their takeover in 2000.

This Whisky won the top prize in its category at the World Whisky Awards 2010.
