The Tormore Distillery is one of the younger distilleries in Scotland and was the first new distillery to be purpose built in the country in the 20th century, construction began in 1958 and was completed in 1960. it is a listed building, and one of the most architecturally striking distilleries. The building is made of granite, has copper rotors and a clock which plays 4 different Scottish songs each quarter of an hour.  

In 1972, the distillery was expanded from four to eight stills. These were converted to be heated by wood chips in 1984, a by-product of area's forestry. Long John was bought by Whitbread & Co in 1975, and the distillery was acquired by Allied Distillers Ltd the same year. The Tormore distillery has been run by Pernod-Ricard since they purchased Allied Domecq in 2005.

A time capsule in the shape of a pot-still is buried in the forecourt, which is intended to be opened in 2060. It contains glasses and a tregnum of Long John, the original owners’ own blended whisky. Below is a selection of whisky produced at the Tormore Distillery:

Long John Blended Scotch Whisky 70cl 40% 



The Long John blend is named for 'Long' John Macdonald, who founded Ben Nevis distillery. These days it's got more Tormore in it and is very popular in France.

Tormore 12 Year Old 70cl 40%

Tormore 12 Bottling Note
A delightful little 12 year old dram from the Speyside distillery, Tormore.

Tormore 12 Tasting Note
Nose: Quite light and fresh. There are notes of cut hay and stemmy grass, cut flowers and a leafy note. Hints of resin and pine oil with malt extract and toasted barley, hints of cinnamon and pepper.
Palate: Medium-body and very smooth. There are notes of Dundee marmalade with fresh zesty note. There are hints of slightly sour grape and fresh hay and grass. There are notes of barley sugar and a soft oak.
Finish: Good length with a touch of oak and hay.

Tormore 15 Year Old 70cl 46%



Tormore 15 Bottling Note
A spicy, gentle 15 year old single malt from the Tormore distillery in Speyside.

Tormore 15 Tasting Note
Nose: Quite light and spirity. There are notes of barley sugars and cereal notes with a generous helping of caramel. Spices and black pepper emerge.
Palate: Medium-body and very spirited. There are notes of oak with winter spice in spades, there is a heat of passionate proportions with black pepper, notes of dried fruit and caramel lurk.
Finish: Long and dry with more pepper.

Tormore 1994 Tasting Note
Nose: Quite light and fresh. There are notes of cut grasses and stemmy hay, cut petals and resin with notes of notes of oily woods, hints of heather honey and a touch of chamomile and rooibus tea. There are some black pepper notes emerging from the oak.
Palate: Medium-body and very smooth. There are notes of marmalade and tulip stems, hints of pine oils with their requisite resinous character. Notes of lemon zest and hints of acacia honey.
Finish: Quite long and smooth.
