The Valhalla Brewery is Britain's most northerly brewery and was opened in December 1997 by husband and wife team, Sonny and Sylvia Priest. The Valhalla Brewery is found in Unst, Shetland - the most northerly island in Britain. The brewery is named after the hall in the celestial regions, home of the Norse god Odin, where slain Viking warriors were borne, to be revived by a horn full of ale.

The brewery is very proud to be able to claim their ales are brewed and bottled in Shetland, in Britain's most northerly brewery. The Valhalla Brewery's unique ales are made in an environment which is clean and the water is pure - pollution is not a problem in these wind-swept isles.

White Wife 3.8% ABV (cask) - 4.5% ABV (bottle)

It takes it's name from the ghostly apparition of an old woman who appears in vehicles, usually driven by lone males, on a lonely stretch of road just three miles from the brewery. It is a light golden clean session ale, with a dry, refreshing, bitterness and a characteristically fruity aftertaste.

Picture
Auld Rock 4.5% ABV

The first ale brewed by Valhalla Brewery. This is a full-bodied, dark Scottish style ale, with a well balanced malt and hop nose, leading to a clean and smooth finish.

Simmer Dim 4.0% ABV

This is a light, golden bitter ale. Its name comes from the Shetland dialect words for that hauntingly beautiful twilight time at midsummer when darkness never descends on these isles - the sun sets, only to rise again just minutes later.

Simmer Dim was launched in April 2000, at the annual Shetland Folk Festival and temporarily named 'Festival 2000' for that event, but was later named Simmer Dim.

Old Scatness 4.0% ABV

A very light bitter from an ancient type of six row barley called bere, with oats and wheat (of which evidence was found at the Old Scatness archaeological dig at the south end of Shetland). This brew has real heather honey added at the end of the boil to give a nice refreshing smoky aftertaste.

Picture
Sjolmet Stout 5.0% ABV

The 'Sjolmet' was a distinctive colour of Shetland cow which, echoing this ale, has a strong dark body and a light coloured head. A very dark full bodied stout, brewed using pale malt, roast barley, malted oats, malted wheat and crystal malt with challenger and East Kent goldings hops. It has a nice chocolate/caramel flavour to tempt the palate.

Picture
Island Bere 4.2% ABV

This ale is made mainly from BERE and as far as we know, it is the first time BERE has been used as the main ingredient in commercial brewing.

A quality beer brewed from bere - a heritage that Vikings are thought to have introduced to Britain in the 8th century. Island Bere is a golden bitter ale with cascade hops which gives it a nice blackcurrant/liquorice aftertaste.
